I was recently browsing Twitter when I came across a topic that sparked my interest. Overwatch players were flaming Battleborn for its lack of popularity, which made me question the rationale behind it. Why are they being so vicious towards another game? Is it possible that these ‘Overwatch fans’ are just trying to boost their own game?
I know that I’m probably just rambling at this point, but hear me out. Let’s look at the facts: Their are over 40 million Overwatch Players in less than a year since its release. It’s an incredible feat for any game to accomplish, even more so with the tough competition it has on Steam and consoles. Battleborn, on the other hand, is sitting at a little over 100k players on Steam. This number isn’t very large compared to Overwatch’s player base, so of course fans are going to comment on it.

Talking about Battleborn preffered over Overwatch Esports:-
The argument that pops up every once in a while is that Battleborn ‘isn’t even out yet’, which has no basis if we look at the fact that Overwatch has been out for a while now. I think it’s safe to assume that Battleborn will never get to the player base Overwatch currently has if we keep going with this argument, so let’s move forward.
If you take a look at the top games on Steam right now, you’ll notice a very interesting observation. Overwatch isn’t present on the list, while Battleborn is in 5th place (currently). It’s true that one game achieved more than 40 million players, while the other has less than 100k.
But let’s take a look at the current top 3 games:
- PLAYERUNKNOWN’S BATTLEGROUNDS
- Counter-Strike: Global
- Dota 2
Even though Overwatch Esport isn’t present on the list, both Battleborn and Playerunknown’s Battlegrounds are. Since Battleborn has less than 100k players, it would make sense that Overwatch fans would at least point their attention towards the game. However, they’re attacking another game that has even less players.
Not only are they flaming Battleborn, but also its developers (Gearbox) as well. Why? Is it really worth pointing your finger at a small indie company instead of Blizzard? I’m not sure, but maybe players are angry that they paid the same price for Battleborn as Overwatch players, yet only received half of the content.
Details on future of Overwatch Players:-
I’m starting to wonder if this is all just a cry out to Blizzerds because they’re afraid that Overwatch will slowly die off now that another FPS has entered its genre. If you look at these two games in the same vein, Overwatch will always be better than Battleborn. Maybe this is why fans are getting so mean towards Battleborn, because they fear for their own game’s popularity?
I might just be pulling thoughts out of thin air at this point, but I believe that there’s something bigger going on here. Are people really honestly upset with Battleborn because of low player count? Do they really think it has no future? I have some advice for them: play what you want to play. If you love Overwatch, then let Overwatch Players play it. Although it’s not the end of the world if another game comes out that people enjoy just as much as your beloved Blizzard title, so do everyone a favor and let these games be.
